Impossible, Nonsense!

This is good stuff.

    Impossible.

"They just think I can't reach this doorbell all by myself!"

That word is foreign to young kids. And by young, I mean young like mine (4, 3, and1) ...and many of yours who are reading this. There is no doubt in Will's mind that he can do anything Jack & Grace can do...just
give him the chance. He may fail 1000 times...but on 1001 (and the fact that he's aged a bit) he'll accomplish his mission. To him, it was a simple goal, packed tight with motivation, and sealed with perseverance...and it worked.

Likewise, my big kids, still do not apply any limitations on the great feats that they can achieve. Watch these young kids of our world. They face physical challenges not with courage or hope...but with the knowledge that they can and will tackle them and then show everyone around them just how awesome they are at doing it! They learn to master an app or plant of crop of carrots because they enjoy the challenge of it, the fun of it. And they do so with little worry that they couldn't. Limitations aren't yet programmed into their psyche.

Yep, she can swing all by herself! 1 down....
So when does that happen? As their mom, I want to do my best to never let that happen. Sure, we have to keep them safe, teach them that there are corners to our world, rough edges to avoid, and to always face the light. But if they have that knowledge, and you are steering them the right way...why even acknowledge anything but their capabilities. Heck with limitations, they are nonsense! Time and again we see survivors of tough physical challenges that go on to meet their goals because they believed they could. And, we see men and women developing new products we can't live without, inventing such things as Doppler radars, the internet, self cleaning ovens, and cars that park themselves. The creators of all these wonderful things knew that they could become real products, and they figured out a way to make that happen- as did their financiers, their marketers, their engineers, and so on.

Try to tell Jack you can't drill a hole without a drill bit...

So why do we as adults set limitations upon ourselves? I'm blessed enough to have been raised with the mindset that I could do anything I wanted. Would it take time, patience, perseverance, maybe money? Sure, but it could be done. Think of your goals, wishes, or "someday" dreams. Why couldn't they become reality? If you reached for them with the mindset of a 4 year old, you'd make them happen for sure. How so?

Well, because you'd start walking that direction...you'd try 1000 times and keep trying....you'd ask for help when you needed it- without shame for asking for that help,....and be openly proud of yourself when you could chart some success along your path! And at your age 4 mindset, you are not yet deluged by the negative chants of our world (at least not in the world I create for my 4 year olds ;)  ). At 4, your friends would be interested in your quest and may even jump in to help...and they, too, would have no doubt that your goal was possible!

Yep, she rode and turned sweet Georgia all by herself, many times! Why would she think she couldn't, right?

But, you say, I am 35, or 25, or 85...so? Don't we know by now, to tune out those negative chants...the voices that make us identify all the limitations of our goals before we even tie our shoes to walk in that direction? Don't we know to leave the nay-sayers at the beginning of the trail and wish them the best of luck as we keep on moving?

I mean, if you're too scared to get this close to the water with a lawn mower, attach it to your tractor, oh yes, this is real...but hey, he got the job done!

Maybe those nay-sayers are even just inner voices...well heck with them, too. No goal is too large and no step towards it is too small. Sure you can make a wreath like the one you saw in Pottery Barn, sure you can run a marathon, or learn to use a Nikon like a pro, or travel to hang with great grands when you're 82. Why couldn't you?

It is you, and only you, that can limit yourself. Get heading towards one of your dreams or goals...and when a challenge comes, tackle it......and keep walking.
After all...even walking was at one time your greatest challenge :)

And, finally, to my parents, and their gift of a Nerinx Hall education to seal the deal ....THANK YOU! I've always known this truth because of you...
and this blog just serves as a reminder to myself
to keep going strong- because I can...and will....do it  :)
